Is Your Green Smoothie, Good?

I’m definitely not blind to the fact that there is a crazy amount of information out there when it comes to eating clean, lean, green, etc. All I can tell you is the best way to feel your best, is to experiment and educate. Ask questions, get involved and speak to professionals! I cringe when I see an abundance of green smoothie recipes hailing to be oh so good for you, but they are piled high with fruit — 3 cups of fruit and 1 cup of greens? Your goal is to be the opposite for a more alkaline (vs. acidic) environment. It might taste fantastic but you are setting yourself up for a big ole sugar crash. If you’re making a refreshing fruit smoothie for a treat every once in a while, then please, knock yourself out! They are a great summer refreshment and I know first hand something my own children enjoy. But, if you’re making a true green smoothie for the purpose of healthy, boosting energy and nutrients, without a sugar crash, then make sure to watch the fruit; not only the kind, but quantity too.

Green smoothies do take some getting used to and it helps having a powerful blender that can handle things like nuts, flax seeds, etc. My current go-to green glass of goodness may not be your cup of tea if you’re new to smoothies, but I would recommend giving it a try nonetheless. Your tummy will thank you!

  • 1.5 cups water
  • 3 cups spinach
  • 1 cup parsley
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1 medjool date
  • 1 heaping T flax seeds
  • 1 heaping T hemp protein powder
  • ice
  • BLEND
  • I stir in my Vitamin D drops & Probiotics once everything is blended

Happy 80th Alec

Happy 80th Alec! It was really lovely meeting you, your wife and your welcoming family. I know the whole photography portion of things was a surprise, so thanks for being such a good sport! I know modelling can be hard work so I’m sure that Carlsberg was a well-deserved reward.

I think it’s such a fabulous idea that Leslie, Alec’s daughter, asked me to come on over and snap a few photos of the family. She didn’t want much, just something to help document her dad’s birthday milestone and their family being together, under one roof. What’s nice about shooting something like this in your home, is that things are captured as is. Not staged, but simply how the dice is tossed. I loved looking through these and seeing everyone’s expressions and guessing at what stories they were telling. The embraces are heartwarming and the one of dear Uncle on the couch, smiling away? LOVE it. Notice how people gather in the kitchen? Shoot it! Making food? Shoot that too. The bottom line is having someone else there to capture things for you, so you can enjoy the family ride. Thanks gang, it was fun!

Good Morning Sunshine

There’s nothing better, or more rejuvenating, than a home-blended smoothie or glass of fresh juice. I know what you’re saying. But I don’t want to clean the machines!  Yes, juicers and blenders require a little extra elbow grease, and food prep can take a few extra minutes you think you don’t have. But, if you get into a routine, machine maintenance is a drop in the bucket and small payoff compared to how you will feel in the long run. It also helps to prep ingredients ahead of time, and place them in containers in the fridge so you’re all set first thing in the morning. There are many amazing benefits when you fuel your body with nutritional freshness.

Juices and Smoothies are not the same. They each have their own purpose! Juices are made with a Juicer and consist of high doses of nutrients in one glass. There’s no fibre in a “juice” so nutrients are quickly absorbed into your system for an almost instant nutritional high! Feeling a little off? Juice up some carrots, ginger and green apple and I can almost guarantee things will turn around. They do for me.  Smoothies are created in a blender. Whatever you toss in the blender, ends up in your glass and winds up in your belly. All that fibre goodness is filling and can definitely be considered one of your daily meals.

One major thing to keep in mind when you blend and juice, is to keep an eye on your fruit and veggie ratio. Don’t amp up the fruit and skimp on the spinach (or your greens of choice). Maintaining your body’s pH balance is really important and the best way to do that is to watch your alkaline and acidic food intake. You can give ‘ole google a go for that one.

I figured the best way to share some of my favourite smoothie and juice recipes, is to take you on a visual journey. Ready? Let’s go!

Love me a hard-boiled egg to go along with my juices, or for a protein-packed snack throughout the day.

I’m a big fan of tweaking existing recipes and making up my own. Here are my top choices for breakfast in my house! Believe it or not, my children absolutely love the Cacao-Banana Smoothie and my daughter is a huge advocate of green juices. She is the pickiest eater alive, but somehow, she has become a green juice convert. It’s true what they say… lead by example and tastebuds will move on over to the green side. Both of my kids are new lovers of the Carrot Citrus Zinger Juice, which is a good thing this winter. Hello Vitamin C!
